Oktoberfest in Montana
Montana has a craft brewery scene that punches well above its weight for a state with a small population, and that makes Oktoberfest season more interesting here than you might expect. Two breweries in particular serve as genuine anchors for German-style beer in the state.
Bayern Brewing and Great Northern Brewing
Bayern Brewing in Missoula is the standout. Bayern brews German-style exclusively — lagers, märzens, hefeweizens, and dunkels made to German tradition. This is not a craft brewery that adds an Oktoberfest seasonal to a roster of IPAs; German brewing is the entire operation. That makes Bayern a legitimate Oktoberfest anchor, and the brewery runs events during the fall season that draw from Missoula’s active outdoor and cultural community.
Great Northern Brewing in Whitefish is another strong option in the northwestern part of the state. Whitefish is a tourist-friendly mountain town with event infrastructure that supports fall festival programming, and the proximity to Glacier National Park means October brings a crowd already oriented toward fall activities.
Missoula
Missoula has the most active Oktoberfest scene in the state. Beyond Bayern Brewing, the city’s university population and outdoor recreation culture generate demand for seasonal festival events. Dedicated Oktoberfest productions and brewery events both appear on the fall calendar.
Helena and Billings
Helena, the state capital, has Oktoberfest events driven by local bars and community organizations. Billings, the largest city in Montana, also has events — its size means more venue options and more organized productions than smaller cities in the state.
October in Montana means fall has fully arrived — expect cool to cold temperatures, especially in the evenings. Events in western Montana (Missoula, Whitefish) tend to be a bit milder than eastern Montana (Billings) at this time of year.
