Oktoberfest season runs from mid-September through the first weekend of October. These are the major US festivals worth planning a trip around β ranked by scale, authenticity, and what makes each one worth the trip.
Tier 1: The Big Four
These are the largest dedicated Oktoberfest events in the United States β festivals that draw hundreds of thousands of attendees and have been running for decades.
- Cincinnati, OH β Zinzinnati Festival, one of the largest in North America. Free admission. Typically September 17β20.
- Helen, GA β Longest-running festival in the US, inside a Bavarian-replica mountain town. Mid-September through early November.
- Mt. Angel, OR β Small-town Oregon festival with a genuine German heritage community. September 10β13.
- Addison, TX β One of the largest in the South, in the Dallas suburb of Addison. Free entry. September 17β20.
Tier 2: Festivals with Deep Heritage
- Frankenmuth, MI β Michigan’s “Little Bavaria,” settled by German immigrants in 1845. Heritage Park. $10/day, under-15 free, Sunday free. September 17β20.
- Milwaukee, WI β The most German city in America by heritage. Old World Third Street. Deep brewing history (Pabst, Miller, Schlitz). Late September/October.
- Denver, CO β 10-day run on Larimer Street. Free entry. September 18β27. Altitude warning: pace yourself.
Tier 3: Strong Regional Events
These cities don’t have one massive centralized festival but have strong Oktoberfest cultures worth knowing about β neighbourhood events, craft brewery scenes, and German heritage neighbourhoods.
- Cleveland, OH β Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, Old Brooklyn neighbourhood, Great Lakes Brewing.
- Pittsburgh, PA β Deutschtown (North Side) as anchor, with brewery taprooms across the city. Genuine German-American neighbourhood.
- Columbus, OH β German Village is one of the largest privately-funded historic districts in the US.
- Nashville, TN β Germantown neighbourhood with real 19th-century German heritage. Hot in September β dress accordingly.
- San Diego, CA β Multiple events: La Mesa village festival, El Cajon, and a strong craft brewery scene. Perfect fall weather.
How to Pick the Right Festival
