Frankenmuth doesn’t do German heritage as a marketing angle — it is German heritage. Bavarian immigrants settled here in 1845, and the town has been “Little Bavaria” ever since, long before most American Oktoberfests existed. When the festival rolls into Heritage Park every September, it fits the town rather than being dropped onto it.
2026 Dates
September 17–20, 2026 at Heritage Park, Frankenmuth, MI. Same weekend as Cincinnati, Addison, and Mt. Angel — if you’re deciding between them, Frankenmuth’s small-town character and genuine heritage give it a distinct personality.
Tickets and Admission
Admission is $10 per day. Children under 15 get in free. Sunday admission is free for everyone — making the last day the obvious budget option. The festival is still fully running on Sunday; it’s not a scaled-down closing day.
What to Expect
Heritage Park is a natural fit — green space, room to spread out, and a town backdrop that already looks the part. German food, traditional beer, live polka and oompah bands. What sets Frankenmuth apart is that you’re in a town that’s been doing this for over 180 years. The German restaurants, bakeries, and shops are open year-round. The architecture is genuinely Bavarian-influenced. The festival is an extension of the town’s identity, and that shows.
The Town Is Worth the Trip on Its Own
- Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland — the world’s largest Christmas store, open year-round, genuinely worth seeing
- Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth — legendary family-style chicken dinner restaurant operating since 1856
- The covered bridge — wooden bridge over the Cass River, photogenic and a short walk from the main street
- The Bavarian Inn — institution for dining and lodging both
Getting There
Frankenmuth is in Saginaw County in the middle of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula — roughly 90 miles north of Detroit (~90 min), 100 miles east of Lansing (~90 min). Drive-in only, no meaningful transit. Arrive early on Saturday; parking fills fast on festival weekends.
Tips
- Sunday free entry is the budget move. Full festival, no admission cost.
- Book accommodation early. Frankenmuth fills year-round — festival weekend even faster.
- Don’t rush through the town. Most visitors who only hit the festival and leave feel like they missed something.
- Layers for the evening. Mid-September in Michigan can drop cold after sunset.
