Georgia has one Oktoberfest destination, and it’s unlike anything else in the country. Helen, a small mountain town in the Blue Ridge foothills, rebuilt itself as a Bavarian village in 1969 and never looked back. The festival doesn’t happen in Helen — Helen is the festival.
Helen GA Oktoberfest 2026
Helen’s Oktoberfest runs from mid-September through early November, making it one of the longest-running and longest-lasting Oktoberfests in the United States. You’re not walking into a fairground tent — you’re walking through a town that has been styled as a Bavarian alpine village for over 50 years. The architecture, the shops, the restaurants, and the biergartens all hold to the theme year-round, and during festival season the whole town fills with live music, traditional food, and import lagers.
What to Expect
Helen sits in the Chattahoochee River valley, surrounded by Blue Ridge Mountains scenery. The festival atmosphere is constant through fall, but weekends draw the biggest crowds. German bands play polka sets, vendors sell pretzels and brats along the main street, and the biergartens along the river are the social center of the event. Because it’s a functioning small town and not a purpose-built fairground, the experience feels more organic than most American Oktoberfests.
Getting There
Helen is about 90 minutes northeast of Atlanta via GA-400 and GA-115. It’s a day trip from Atlanta or a weekend stay — the town has hotels, cabins, and rental properties throughout the surrounding mountains. Fall foliage peaks in mid-October, which overlaps with the festival’s final weeks and makes the drive itself worthwhile.
